What is CBT, Really?

What is CBT, Really?

CBT, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, is simply a way of looking at how our thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected. It is practical, structured, and focused on everyday life.

Imagine you have a big presentation at work. A thought crosses your mind: “I am going to mess this up.” That single thought can spark a wave of anxiety and self-doubt. The feeling of dread builds, and when the moment comes, you either avoid preparing or deliver your presentation without confidence. The cycle continues and reinforces itself.

Now, picture the same situation with a slightly different thought: “This is a chance to share what I know. I might be nervous, but I can prepare and do my best.” The feeling changes. Instead of dread, there is a mix of nerves and hope. You take time to prepare, and when you speak, you come across with more clarity and focus.

This is the heart of CBT. When we notice the cycle between thought, feeling, and action, we create the opportunity to shift it. Even small changes in our thinking can ripple outward and transform how we experience everyday challenges.

Can you recall a time when a thought shaped the way you felt and how you responded?
